Exploring turpentine history at Goethe State Forest throughout the area I could see evidence from the industry. Herty cups were attached to pine trees and were used to collect sap and resin for making turpentine. The markings left behind on the trees were known as catfaces. Turpentine was once Florida’s largest industry, and one of the oldest industries in the United States. Turpentine was a ubiquitous ingredient in American household products including paints, medicines, hair spray, and cosmetics, just to name a few. The industry was a driving force behind the development of many towns and cities in the 1800's and early 1900's. Watch Part One here:
